The Jazz Bakery is pleased to be a part of the second annual “Broad Fest” in the Edye Second Space at the Broad Stage in Santa Monica and thrilled to present long-time JB collaborator pianist/composer Billy Childs.  The Second Annual Broad Fest features free performances and interactive art activities for kids of all ages from 11am to 3pm, at The Edye Second Space and on The Broad Stage plaza.

Mr. Childs will perform 1:15pm - 1:45pm.  He is a Los Angeles native who defines piano performance and composition in both jazz and classical music.  He has received numerous orchestral commissions from: the LA Phil, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Master ChoraleMr. Childs is equally accomplished in the jazz world writing compositions for (and often performing with): The Kronos Quartet, the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, the American Brass Quintet, and the Dorian Wind Quintet.

Childs’ solo jazz recording career began in 1988, after apprenticing with Freddie Hubbard and J.J. Johnson.  Since then, he has received ten Grammy nominations and three Grammy awardsMr. Childs has been selected for many of music's top accolades including the Doris Duke Performing Artist Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship and Chamber Music America composer’s grant.

Billy has recently performed with: Yo-Yo Ma, Sting, Wynton Marsalis, Jack DeJohnette, Ron Carter, the Ying String Quartet and Chris Botti.  In January 2010, The Detroit Symphony (Leonard Slatkin conducting) premiered ChildsConcerto For Violin And Orchestra with Regina Carter as soloist.  Upcoming projects include a new piece for Duke University composed for his jazz/chamber ensemble featuring Dianne Reeves and the Ying Quartet.
